Conidiophores very dark and stout, bearing a brush-like apical branching structure that is terminated by tapered annellides. The colourless 1-celled spores (conidia) are produced continuously from the tips of the annelides and collect in a large drop of fluid. Phialocephala and Verticicladiella are related genera which differ in having phialides or sympodial conidial production respectively. On wood and conifer needles. Holomorph: Ophiostoma.
